Potential playoff expansion plus Pete Carroll to coach the Poly Bowl
5/7/2026
In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham, RJ Abeytia and intern India Otto are back in studio discussing the latest news and notes around the USC football program and college football in general. With spring football in the rearview mirror we are keeping tabs on how the Trojans are navigating the off-season and how the sport we all love makes tweaks to the rules and post-season. Last week the American Football Coaches Association voted to expand the college football playoffs along with a few other modifications to the college football calendar. Their proposal would double the size of the CFP bracket from 12 to 24 teams and eliminate the conference championship games. It would also condense the regular season with only one bye week, preserve the Army/Navy game and make sure the season ends by the second week in January. The crew also talks about former USC head coach Pete Carroll coaching in the Polynesian Bowl against former Texas head coach Mack Brown, the "five to play five" proposal in college football, expanding the NCAA basketball tournament to 76 teams and former Trojan safety Will Harris getting promoted in Miami to the secondary coach and passing game coordinator. Coach Harvey Hyde gives his thoughts on USC spring football 2026
4/6/2026
On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together discussing the Trojans wrapping up spring football with a lot of positive takeaways from the five weeks of workouts. With the defensive staff upgraded and 31 new incoming freshman on campus, the team should be poised for a run at the College Football Playoffs. Coach Hyde feels this is the time for Lincoln Riley to shine and there should be no excuses why this program can't take care of business on the field this fall. The guys also talk about how this is the end of an era, with the final football practice that the team will come out of the John McKay Center and cross the street to get to Howard Jones Field. In the fall the Bloom Center will open and players can come right out of the building onto the practice field. Once again USC did not host a traditional spring game and Coach Hyde felt it was a missed opportunity for the team to put one final showcase together and get another weekend of headlines heading into the long off-season. Fans will be able to check out the team on Saturday, April 11 for the Fan Appreciation Day along with the great Swim with Mike event. Coach Harvey Hyde has been part of the Peristyle Podcast since 2008 and in the USC football world he is an expert on X's and O's, personnel, coaching philosophies and recruiting. USC hitting the home stretch of spring football practices
4/1/2026
In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham, RJ Abeytia and intern India Otto are back in studio talking about the Trojans nearing the end of spring football 2026. The team was out on Howard Jones Field Tuesday and Wednesday morning for practices No. 12 and No. 13 respectively, and now there are only two workouts left coming up on Friday and Saturday mornings. The crew gives an update on the injury situation, with a few new names added to the list but still nothing serious with everyone expected to be able to participate in off-season workouts this summer. They also talk about some of the drills that were run during the open portions of practice this week, including a fun looking punt coverage drill where gunners tried to down the ball as close to the goal line as possible without letting the ball go into the end zone. Head coach Lincoln Riley spoke on Wednesday morning and they discuss what he said plus what stood out from the offensive players media scrums on Tuesday and the defensive players earlier this morning. They also discuss the new SP+ rankings that came out, with the Trojans coming in at No. 13 in the country and why there is optimism that USC could be ranked even higher with the improvements made on special teams.
