Psalm 82: The Divine Judge

5/14/2026
God sits in judgment above all authorities, and He calls them to account for the injustice they show against His divine mandate. He has called them to give justice to those most in need, but when they act in ignorance of God’s command, they shake the very foundations of life. Those who would set themselves over God’s authority, whether human beings or false gods, are ultimately brought into death. Therefore, the people of God call upon Him to act according to who He is and bring His righteous justice. Rev. Jacob Dandy, pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church and School in Atchison, KS, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Psalm 82. To learn more about Trinity Lutheran, visit trinityatchison.org. Psalm 72: God Save the King

5/13/2026
Psalm 72 prays to the LORD concerning the king to whom He gives justice and righteousness and through whom He brings justice and righteousness to His people and to the world. Although our earthly kings—even David and Solomon—fall short of the ideal God gives in His Word, the Lord Jesus does not. He is the King who perfectly cares for the poor and the needy. He is the King over all kings. He is the King who does wondrous things, whose name is blessed forever. Rev. Psalm 64: Ambushed by God’s Arrows

5/12/2026
David knows that his enemies are secretly plotting against him, and so he asks God to preserve his life. These enemies set an ambush for David by their words, thinking that no one can see them. Yet, the LORD sees and springs His own ambush against these enemies that brings them to ruin by their own plots. When the nations see the LORD’s actions, they fear Him and tell what He has done, even as His own people rejoice and take refuge in Him. Rev. Psalm 56: What Can Man Do to Me?

5/11/2026
As David’s enemies attack him on every side all day long, he puts his trust in God. The Word of God is the Christian’s praise and trust so that there is no need to fear the power of man, which cannot conquer God and His Word. As the enemies of God persecute His people, God personally knows each of their sufferings so that His people can be certain that God is for them and live according to His Word in thanksgiving for all that He has done. Psalm 53: What a Fool Believes

5/8/2026
In Psalm 53, David repeats much of his prayer from Psalm 14 as he speaks about the folly that infects all mankind. Even the smartest of people show their foolishness when they live in the practical atheism that acts without the fear of God. Such folly is the state of all mankind apart from the grace of God. In that grace, God’s people cry out to him to deliver them from evil and bring His salvation through Jesus Christ, the Word dwelling in our flesh. Rev. Psalm 45: A Royal Love Song

5/7/2026
The love song of Psalm 45 points us toward the love that exists between the King, Jesus Christ, and His Bride, the Church. As true God and true man, Jesus is the beautiful and victorious King over His enemies. He rules with true righteousness, and His people join Him in the splendor of His heavenly palace. Both Jews and Gentiles through faith rejoice in the Lord Jesus Christ, who reigns forever and ever. Rev. Ryan Ogrodowicz, pastor at Grace Lutheran Church and School in Brenham, TX, joins host Rev. Psalm 38: Healing from God’s Arrows

5/6/2026
David feels the consequences God has brought upon him for his sin, and so he turns to God as the only Source of rescue from such consequences. The effects of sin are both spiritual and physical, and the LORD knows them already. Prayer cries out to Him in trust that He alone can help, even when friends and foes alike provide no refuge. On the LORD alone we wait, asking Him to be near quickly for our salvation. He keeps this promise through our Savior, Jesus. Rev. Jeremiah Johnson, pastor at Glory of Christ Lutheran Church in Plymouth, MN, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Psalm 38. To learn more about Glory of Christ, visit gloryofchrist.org. Psalm 30: God’s Gracious Reversal

5/5/2026
David praises the LORD for bringing him up and giving him healing ultimately from death. Such praise belongs not only to David but to all Christians because God’s anger over our sins quickly turns to His gracious favor for the sake of Christ. Therefore, we cry to Him for help, knowing that His promise of resurrection turns our momentary mourning into eternal singing. Rev. Psalm 21: The King Trusts in the LORD

5/4/2026
David prays in joy for what the LORD has accomplished for him and through him as king. The LORD’s blessings have overflowed for David and for all Israel because of the LORD’s steadfast love. The LORD has given victory to Israel from their enemies, and He is exalted as the true King. In this way, David and all the kings of Israel point forward to the eternal reign of Jesus Christ. Rev. Psalm 13: Protest, Petition, and Praise

5/1/2026
The prayer of Psalm 13 sets the pattern for many other psalms and for our own prayers as Christians. David repeatedly cries out to the LORD, “How long,” protesting God’s seeming absence while David experiences the troubles of his soul and the attacks of his enemies. David then asks that the LORD answer him by granting him life and keeping the enemies from prevailing. Knowing the LORD’s faithfulness, David continues in his trust and joins in the praises and songs of all God’s people to the Savior. Rev. Zelwyn Heide, pastor at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Hanover, ND and Zion Lutheran Church in New Salem, ND, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Psalm 13. Psalm 12: O Lord, Look Down from Heaven, Behold!

4/30/2026
Psalm 12 prays against the lying and flattering words that speak against the truth of God’s Word. Christians realize the battle against the Word of God and cry out honestly to the LORD to act decisively against those who set their words over His. In such an imprecatory prayer, we pray against our own sinful nature. As God speaks His Word, He acts, so that His Word is proved true and provides a true refuge for us as we walk through the flames of this world. Rev. Psalm 10: The LORD Sees, Hears, and Arises

4/29/2026
Christians often see the prosperity of the wicked and wonder why the LORD seems hidden. The wicked are those whose faith is not founded in the LORD, and that unbelief shows itself in their evil intentions and actions toward others. Christians pray in confidence to the LORD that He does see and will act for the good of His people. He reigns as King so that the afflicted and the oppressed have refuge in Him. Rev. Psalm 9: God’s Throne of Mercy

4/28/2026
David prays to the LORD as the One who sits on His heavenly throne. Knowing God in faith, David and all Christians receive the LORD’s coming in joy and praise, while the enemies of the LORD receive His coming in terror. David asks that the LORD would accomplish justice and righteousness for all His people, allowing the wicked to receive the evil that they have prepared for others. The LORD promises that He will sustain the afflicted and needy from those who mean them harm. Rev. Psalm 7: Refuge from Prowling Lions

4/27/2026
Although David’s enemies seek his harm, he cries out to the LORD as his refuge. The LORD is the Righteous One who arises to judge all people. While He brings the wicked to their end, He establishes the righteous through faith in Him. Those who refuse to repent encounter the LORD as the Divine Warrior who allows their wickedness to fall upon them. For these just judgments, David and all Christians give thanks to the LORD. Rev. Spring into the Psalms - Psalm 6: Gracious Discipline

4/24/2026
David prays that the LORD’s discipline would be gracious rather than wrathful, so that the LORD would bring healing to his troubled body and soul. The LORD’s steadfast love is the foundation of such a prayer, even as tears flow due to the sin and suffering we experience. Yet the prayer of the Christian remains confident in the LORD’s answer and protection from all enemies. Rev. David Appold, pastor at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Paducah, KY, joins host Rev. Genesis 50:15-26: God Meant It for Good

4/23/2026
Now that Jacob has died, Joseph’s brothers worry that Joseph’s forgiveness may vanish, even after so many years. They plead before Joseph, who weeps at their request. Joseph assures them that God has accomplished good even through their intended evil, and Joseph promises that he will care not only for his brothers, but for their children as well. The book of Genesis concludes by recounting Joseph’s death many years later. Even as Joseph dies in Egypt, his prophecy concerning God’s coming deliverance from the land of Egypt concludes Genesis with a note of hope. Rev. Dr. Martin Dressler, pastor at Salem Lutheran Church and School in Black Jack, MO, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Genesis 50:15-26. Genesis 49:28-50:14: Buried in Hope

4/22/2026
Jacob reiterates his command that he be buried in the Promised Land in the same place where his fathers are buried. When Jacob dies, Joseph grieves and provides for his father’s instructions to be followed. The funeral procession from Egypt to the Promised Land is filled with pomp and circumstance, but at its heart, Jacob’s burial confesses the reality of resurrection that the LORD promises to His people. Genesis 49:1-27: The Testament of Israel

4/21/2026
Before he dies, Jacob gathers his twelve sons to him to bless them by speaking prophetically concerning the days to come for each of his sons and their descendants. He speaks first to the sons of Leah, then to the sons of the maidservants, and finally to the sons of Rachel. The first three sons of Jacob hear words that recount former sins. Through the fourth son, Judah, the line of the Christ will continue by God’s grace. Many of the sons hear words that prove true geographically in the history of Israel. To Joseph especially Jacob reserves words of great favor and love. The prayer that Jacob includes right in the middle expresses his faith: “I wait for your salvation, O LORD.” Rev. Genesis 48:1-22: A Crosshanded Blessing

4/20/2026
When Joseph learns that his father is near death, he takes his sons with him to receive a blessing from Jacob. In thanksgiving to what God has done for him, Jacob adopts Joseph’s two sons as his own. Although Joseph arranged his sons so that the older would be blessed at Jacob’s right and the younger at Jacob’s left, Jacob crossed his hands to bless the younger over the older. Jacob’s blessing is efficacious, and Ephraim becomes one of the most prominent tribes in the nation of Israel, even over the descendants of his older brother Manasseh. Rev. Genesis 47:13-31: Israel Multiplies Even in a Famine

4/17/2026
As the famine continues into the third year and beyond, even the residents of Egypt begin to run out of the food that they had stored for themselves. Through a series of stages, Joseph receives their livestock, their land, and their service into the possession of Pharaoh so that he can provide food for Egypt and keep the nation from death. Even as Egypt suffers during the famine, the family of Israel multiplies in Goshen.
